Mrs. Borden and Mrs. Jones’ Newsletter (week of March 25, 2019)

Writing- Sequencing a story has been going along swimmingly!  We know the important words of:first, next, last and have been writing steps to make things (chocolate, cookies, bread) and some of us were able to transfer these skills to write their own stories on the back of papers!  We also wrote about what kind of transportation we need in an emergency and what that transportation is best suited to do.  We are going to add a little bit of Handwriting formation practice to morning work in order to brush up on our skills.

Reading- We have a new story this week and it is: Trucks Roll!  It is a rhyming nonfiction story.  Our essential question is: What kinds of transportation help people do their jobs?  Our amazing words are: trailers, cabs, haul, steering, wheel, truckers, headlight.  We will be working on compare and contrast and we will be identifying where we find capital letters in print and using end marks.  Keep on practicing those sight words and reading together each night for your book logs!  We can tell you are working so hard on the list. They are moving through their lists quickly. Keep up the good work. Books logs are due at the end of the month please.

Math- We are moving right along with Subtraction.  We have been using different objects and pictures to tell stories about how many we had originally, how many went away, and how many are left.  We have been modeling the stories, acting them out, and writing the corresponding number sentence.  We are also so thrilled with the progress in Spring Math (our buddy math).  We have met 4 classroom goals this week.  The first was counting the number of dots and writing the correct number (0-20) and the second was making the correct number of dots for a given number (0-10).  The second goal we met on the first day of practice!  The students were given a number and dots in a line, but they the number of dots was not correct.  They had to either cross out dots or add more dots to show the correct number. The third goal was addition facts 0-5 and the fourth was subtraction facts 0-5. We celebrated with Popsicles and a special visit from Ms. Whitaker. She brought us treats and we will be going to the big playground for a picnic as a reward!
