week of May 27, 2014

This is the last full week of school.  Please refer to any prior newsletters, blog posts, calendars, or notes for a full list of activities this week and the last day of school on June 2.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call or write a note and we will get back to you.

Please note that Kindergarten contributed $300 to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.  Thanks for all that donated!

Important Information:
Monday: Day 5 Computers
Tuesday: Day 1 Art
Wednesday: Day 2 Book Exchange (All Library books have been due)
Thursday: Day 3 Music
Friday: Day 4 Gym (Please wear sneakers)


 
*We will still be collecting change for the American Cancer Society this week.  Please label any money that comes in with your child’s name and our name and the name of destination (ex. lunch money, book order, American Cancer society, etc.)
.
Our Field Trip will be May 28, 2014 and it will be to the Pioneer Tunnel.
 
Graduation will be May 20. 
 
Carnival Day will be May 23, please see ½ sheet in your child’s folder with volunteer information if you are interested and able.
Coming Up Next Week:
Phonics- We will be working on the combinations ar, or, and er like in star, horse, and butter. We will also review digraphs and combinations, and long and short vowels.  We are scheduled to finish the Kindergarten Phonics papers this week and then be practicing more reading and writing skills to prepare for 1st grade!
 
Math – We finished Chapter 14, Identifying and Describing Shapes.  We will be taking the test on Monday and starting Chapter 15 on Tuesday.
 
Reading – Our new story is called Homes Around the World. We will discuss comparing and contrasting. This begins our new Reading unit on Homes.  We will also be working on verbs and using I and me.
 
*There will be no more homework for the remainder of the Kindergarten year in our room.  Please continue to check your child’s folder daily for any information that must be read and daily work should be cleaned out.*

We finished The Magic Tree House Book #  4 and began # 5 Night of the Ninja!

Upcoming Dates

May 28 – Field Trip to Pioneer Tunnel, May 29 – Field trip rain date.

Please continue to practice sight words and nonsense words often.

At the beginning of May, the Reading teachers will test each child for an End-of-the-year Kindergarten test.  Children will need to write a dictated sentence or two, recognize, write, and give the sound of every letter of the alphabet, be able to provide a word that begins with every letter of the alphabet, and be able to write as many words correctly in 10 minutes. Students may write sight words, word family words, names etc.  Please try at home to work on some of the areas to be tested to ensure that your child is fully prepared. 

Coming Up Next Week:
Phonics- We will continue to work on reading and writing vowel consonant sneaky e words and introduce digraph ch and ee.

Math – We will identify and describe shapes. We will take our Unit 13 assessment and begin Unit 14.

Reading – Our new story is This is the Way We Go to school. We will work on the comprehension skill Drawing Conclusions.

Writing – We will work on writing invitations.

Grammar – differentiate between nouns and verbs
