week of October 30, 2017

Mrs. Borden and Mrs. Jones’ Newsletter (Week of October 30, 2017)
***In Math, we are continuing on Topic 1, One to Five.  We will be counting 1-5 and counting objects in different arrangements.  We will also be reading and writing numbers 1-5.  We have been counting every day to 100 and have been writing numbers 0-10 in Handwriting.  We are very prepared to start this topic!  You can still practice one to one correspondence by counting objects like pennies, paper clips, or other objects by touching each object while counting them.
***In Reading, our new story is: Animal Babies in Grasslands and we will be discussing the Main Idea of the story.  Our new amazing words are: calf, cub, joey, grassland, pup, foal.  We are working on using adjectives for colors and shapes.  In the Morning Message, we have been practicing rhyming and first sounds.
***Science/Social Studies- We will be connecting our Science of Earth/Sky and Social Studies of Land/Water and use our observation skills to better define what we see in our world.  The pumpkin investigation was a hit! We made observations, predications, measured, talked about sink/float, and described a pumpkin.  We also read many stories (fiction and nonfiction) that talked about the pumpkin life cycle and the uses for pumpkins.
***Handwriting- We will be finishing up all of our capital letters this week and we have made our numbers 0-10.  As soon as we practice the last capital letter, we will be moving on to lowercase formations.  We are so excited to see the improvement in letter formations, sizing, and pencil grip each and every day!
***Reminders: Please do not send candy from Halloween for snack, thank you!  There are new calendars/menus coming home for November.  Please reference them to see the exciting things going on in our school.  Also, please continue to practice sight words and read for the AR log nightly.
Tips and Trick for at home on Phonemic Awareness:
-Do activities to help your child build sound skills (make sure they are short and fun; avoid allowing your child to get frustrated):
o Help your child think of a number of words that start with the /m/ or /ch/ sound, or other beginning sounds.
o Make up silly sentences with words that begin with the same sound, such as "Nobody was nice to Nancy's neighbor".
o Play simple rhyming or blending games with your child, such as taking turns coming up with words that rhyme (go – no) or blending simple words (/d/, /o/, /g/ = dog).
Read books with rhymes. Teach your child rhymes, short poems, and songs.
Practice the alphabet by pointing out letters wherever you see them and by reading alphabet books.
