week of February 27, 2016

Mrs. Borden and Mrs. Jones’ Newsletter Week of February 27, 2017

-Our new story is: If You Could Go to Antarctica and we will be classifying and categorizing.  We will be looking at writing sentences with capital letters at the beginning and punctuation at the end.  Our amazing words are: Antarctica, icebergs, seals, continent, penguins, whales.  We will be reviewing character and setting as well.

-In Math: we started Topic 8, Understanding Subtraction.  We will listen to number stories about separating groups.  We will learn about subtraction sentences, the minus sign, and how to find differences.  Our new math words are: left, separate, subtraction sentence, minus sign. 

-For Science, we will be examining Living and Nonliving things.  Our essential question is: What can you tell about living things?

Reminders:
Please pack a small snack daily.  If your child would like a drink with it, please pack that as well.

February 24- Community Involvement Movie Night, “The Secret Life of Pets”, 6:30 pm
February 27- Day 9

February 28- AR book logs due, 15 books a month goal

Reading- This week our story is “One Little Mouse” and we will be talking about animal adventures in this book.  Our amazing words are: woodland nest vale hollow comfortable shadows.  We will be further discussing cause and effect with this story as well.

Math-Our topic is be Topic 7, Understanding Addition.  We will be learning to join two groups and tell how many there are all together.  We will learn how to use the plus sign and the equal sign and learn about addition sentences.  Our new math words are: number story, join, plus sign, addition sentence.

Tips and Tricks:
Nightly- Please review sight words and read for the AR log.  The goal is at least 15 books a month.  If you need additional logs, please let us know.

Reading Skills- Please practice all letters, sounds, and words that begin with each letter.  You can take one word and do a lot with it, for example: cat- you can make the beginning sound, make all of the sounds, count syllables, and blend the sounds together to make the whole word.  You can also build vocabulary by seeing how many words you can use to describe the word.

Math Skills- Please practice counting to 100 by 1s, 5s, 10s, and practice counting to 30 by 2s.  Number writing is also a great skill to review to ensure there are no number reversals.

Reading: This week our story is “My Lucky Day” and we are talking about adventures.  We will also be looking at cause and effect in the story.   Our amazing words are: piglet, fox, lucky, filthy, cook, scrubberWe will be reviewing action words (verbs). 
Math: Our new topic will be Topic 7, Understanding Addition.  We will be learning to join two groups and tell how many there are all together.  We will learn how to use the plus sign and the equal sign and learn about addition sentences.  Our new math words are: number story, join, plus sign, addition sentence.
