week of February 29, 2016

Math- Our new topic is Topic 9 and the essential question is: “What are the different ways to make a number?”.  We can use objects to show numbers 4,5,6,7,8,9, and 10 in two parts.  We can write number sentences to describes numbers 4-10 into 2 parts.  We will also make graphs using real objects or pictures to answer questions.  We will continue to add and subtract, use a 10 frame, and compare/contrast greater and fewer. 

Science- Our new unit is Life Science.  We will be looking at two different chapters in the Life Science unit.  We will be completing Living and Nonliving Things and Plants and Animals.  Our first essential question for Living and Nonliving Things is: “What can you tell about living things?”  We will also be comparing and contrasting plants and animals.  We will continue to complete the daily calendar activities as well as weather.

Reading- We will be reading: Goldilocks and the Three Bears.  We will be identifying and describing character in the story.  Our amazing words are: bears, cottage, middle-sized, porridge, big, small.  We will be discussing authors and illustrators as well.

Phonics/Grammar- Our new letter is Gg like in Goat.  We will be identifying initial and final Gg in words.  We have been working on parts of a sentence and identifying a telling sentence vs. an asking sentence.  We will be making a list as well.

On April 16 and April 17, the NSE PTO will be hosting a Chinese Auction at the Elementary school for a fundraiser.  More information to follow.

Week of February 15, 2016


Math- Our essential question for Topic 8 is “What types of situations involve subtraction?”  We will: act out number stories that involve separating 2 groups, act out subtraction problems and record the answer, use the equal sign, subtract, and write the difference, determine how many are left when some objects are taken away, write and solve subtraction sentences to show take away situations, compare 2 groups to find out how many more are fewer, use the minus sign to represent take away situation, and solve problems by choosing addition or subtraction.

Science- Our new chapter is Chapter 8, Motion and we will: learn what makes objects move and how they move.  We will also learn about magnets. We will also review how to describe an object’s position. Our new vocabulary includes: position, above, below, push, pull, fast, slow, magnet, attract.
Reading- We will be reading: My Lucky Day.  We will be comparing/contrasting  in the story.  Our amazing words are: piglet, lucky, cook, fox, filthy, scrubber.  We will be discussing cause and effect as well.


Phonics/Grammar- Our new letter is Ll like in Lemon.  We will be identifying initial and final Ll in words.  We are finding the action parts of the sentence after finding the naming parts this past week.  We will also be looking at poems and rhyming patterns.

Science- We will be focusing on “What is a mixture?” and the things that make up the mixtures.  We will be making our own mixture and record our answers.  Finally, we will be looking at the mixtures that we eat.  We will be taking our Matter and Mixtures assessment next week, please also sign and return that one when it comes home as well, many thanks!

Reading- We will be reading: Rooster’s off to see the World.  We will be discussing sequence in the story.  Our amazing words are: world, trip, journey, lonely, horizon, homesick.  There is a growing pattern in this story and we have been able to predict what comes next.

Phonics/Grammar- Our new letter is Hh like in Hat.  We will be identifying initial H in words.  We also always review nouns, verbs, and adjectives.  We have been trying to make our sentences longer by adding more descriptive words to them.

Writing- Our lowercase letters for next week are mostly vowels, i,e, and a review of u.  We will also be practicing l.  We will also be working on “naming parts” of the sentence and following directions.

Important Information
-Our 100th day was so much fun!  We have been looking forward to it for so long and everyone thoroughly enjoy it!
