Week of October 29

Mrs. Borden & Mrs. Jones’ Nifty Newsletter (Week of October 29)

In Phonics we’ll be working with the letter Mm as in monkey.   We will hear and identify the initial and final sounds heard in words, play a game to rhyme words and unblend words to count the sounds.

In Math we’ll be working on sets of ten, describing relative position of objects, acting out story problems using pennies and identifying time to the hour.

Our new Reading story is called Animal Babies in Grasslands. We will discuss who lives in the grasslands and talk about the main idea of the story. The main idea is the most important thing the author wants to talk about.

Week of October 15

We had a fantastic time at our Pajama party today!  The class got to participate in lots of “Pp” activities.  It was definitely a PERFECT day!  Next week we will be learning about the letter “Aa” as in apple, alligator, and astronaut.

This week in Reading we reread “Dig, Dig, Digging.”  We learned that trucks, tractors, fire engines and helicopters all work very hard!  But, after a long, happy day of beep-beeping and vroom-vrooming, even the hardest working machines need to rest.  Next week, we’ll begin Unit 2, Animals Live Here, and read the story “Life in the Ocean.”

In Math we will name shapes using 3 attributes, compare triangles and squares, and order numbers from 1-10.  We will also continue to practice AB patterns and sorting.

Thursday was the Kindergarten Fall Festival and it was a HUGE success thanks to all of the parents and grandparents who helped.  Students got to make fall crafts, taste some fall foods, and even go on a hayride!   A special thank you to the following individuals and organizations that made donations to our special day:

*Mr. Ray Reichwein for donating his wagon and tractor for our hayride.

*Boyer’s grocery stores for donating cookies.

*Home Depot for donating scarecrows and other fall items for the fall scene picture station.

*Sara Lee for their donation of many goodies!

* Hart Farms of Ringtown for their donations of pumpkins!!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and in an effort to promote awareness students are invited to wear pink every Thursday during the month of October!  Please note that students are allowed to wear Spartan t-shirts, even though it’s not gym day, as long as they are pink!

PTO is selling pink bracelets at the school store for $2.  The proceeds of this sale will benefit one of our NSE teachers who is battling breast cancer.  If you would like to purchase bracelets please send the money in an envelope with your child’s name, the amount, and “bracelets.”  Your support of this cause is greatly appreciated!

Friday, October 19th is a half day for students!  There has been a change in the menu for that day.  Regular lunch will be a hot dog on a roll with baked beans and mixed fruit.  Alternate is Pizza.

On Wednesday, October 17th, we will have a drug and alcohol presentation by Diane Rowland to help get us ready for Red Ribbon Week.  Red Ribbon Week will be October 22-26.  More information will be sent home next week.

If you are interested in purchasing a pink “Welker’s Warriors” T-shirt and did not receive an order form please let me know as soon as possible.
