week of December 22,2014

*First and foremost, Mrs. Borden and Mrs. Jones would like to extend warm holiday wishes to you and your families.  We are most thankful for the first half of the year being so successful because your children are such hard workers and also your family support.  We are excited for the continued progress in the New Year!

*Winter break begins with an early dismissal on December 23 at 1pm and school resumes on January 5, 2015.

*We will begin with new chapters/topics in Reading and Math on January 5.  Introduction newsletters will be sent that day as well.  Homework will resume that week as well.

*It will be Day 4 when we return, please wear sneakers for gym class.

*AR book logs for December are due January 5 when we get back to school.

*Have a most relaxing and well deserved break with your family and we will see you in 2015!*

week of December 15, 2014

This week in class:

Math:  We have just introduced Topic 5, Numbers to 20.  Our essential question will be: How can numbers to 20 be counted, read, and written.  We have been counting daily and using the calendar to introduce the teen numbers, but we will be spending more time on them now and reviewing them in this chapter.  We will continue to use more and fewer and analyze number lines in Math Meeting as well as using problem solving skills to figure out missing numbers.

Reading/Phonics: Our story is called: “Little Quack” and the skill we will be focusing on is: plot.  We are also working on Rr in the beginning of words and end of words. We will be working on using verbs in past and present tense.  We also will be working on sequence of events.  Our amazing words for this story are: duckling, paddle, proud, pond, plunged, brave.

Science/Centers: We have been working on rhyming, syllables, number words, sight words, and writing in our center rotations.  Our writing included what we can do in winter and what we do around the holidays.  We finished up our Science unit on weather/seasons/Earth and sky.

Reminders:

*Please keep the sight word envelope in the folder. Please practice those daily.  The words include: I, am, the, little, have, is, to, a, my, we, like, he, with she, look, see, they, you, of, are, do, that.

Please wear a hat, gloves, and a warm coat daily.  We go out to recess as much as possible!  Please also write your name on the items because they get misplaced easily.

week of December 8, 2014

Math:  We will be finishing Topic 4, Comparing and Ordering Numbers 0-10.  We will be finishing ordering numbers on a number line as well as problem solving using objects.  The assessment will be given towards the end of the week.  We will also start discussing the change to the New Year during Math Meeting along with days and months.  We introduced ¼ and 1/3 in pictures as well.

Reading/Phonics: Our story is called: “Little Panda” and the skill we will be focusing on is: comparing and contrasting.  We are also working on Nn and Bb in the beginning of words and end of words. We will be working on summarizing and using verbs.  We also will be working on responding to literature.  Our amazing words for this story are: weigh, healthy, curious, bamboo, explore.

Science:  In science, we have been working on times of day and seasons of the year.  We are working on characteristics of weather and of each season.  We will be doing holiday centers and have completed lots of holiday writings like a reindeer application and our holiday wish.

We just had our December guidance lesson with Mrs. Hull about being good listeners.

We have gone over all of the winter holidays using Brain Pop Jr. and the Weekly Readers.
