week of February 2, 2015

This week in class:

Math:  Our topic is still: Topic 7, Addition.  We will have: stories about joining, joining groups, using the plus sign, find sums, and making addition sentences.  We hope to finish the chapter next week in order to take our assessment.  The children did a great job with using Little Quack to act out addition sentences. In Math Meeting, we have been counting by ones, fives, tens, tens, and been counting from one number to another (like starting at 65 and counting to 83).  We will also continue to practice counting to 100 and more 100 fun on the 100th day of school. (See attached note)

Reading/Phonics:  Our new story is called: “The Lion and the Mouse” and the skill we will be focusing on is: main idea.  We are also working on Oo in the beginning of words and middle of words. We will be working on listening to: poems and sentences.   Our amazing words for this story are: jungle, nibbling, trembling, beast, snarled, entangled.

Science:  We started: Chapter 7, Matter and Mixtures.  We will: identify and measure solid objects, observe how liquids take the shape of their containers, tell that gases fill their containers, tell how water changes by freezing/melting/boiling, and tell what is in some mixtures.  We will also be using attributes to compare and contrast objects.

The Jump Rope for Heart information is coming home and will take place in February at NSE.  Any donations must be placed in the envelope.

This week in class:

Reading/Phonics: Our new story is called: “Then and Now” and the skill we will be focusing on is: drawing conclusions.  We are also working on Oo in the beginning of words and middle of words. We will be working on listening to: nonfiction stories.   Our amazing words for this story are: gears, webcams, phonographs, headphones, handwritten, newspapers.

Science: We will start: Chapter 7, Matter and Mixtures.  We will: identify and measure solid objects, observe how liquids take the shape of their containers, tell that gases fill their containers, tell how water changes by freezing/melting/boiling, and tell what is in some mixtures.  Look out for the Chapter 7 Newsletter coming home next week for more information.

weeks of January 12 and January 19, 2015

*We appreciate all of your patience and support with getting back into routine from holiday break, days off, delays, and end of the marking period assessments.  Homework resumes next week.*

Last week and this week in class:

Math:  Our topic is Topic 6, Numbers to 100.  We have counted to 30, estimated about how many, counted to 100 and used a 100 chart.  We will be working on groups of ten, finding a pattern on a 100 chart and looking for a pattern.  In Math Meeting, we have been counting by ones, fives, tens, and been counting from one number to another (like starting at 65 and count to 83).  We will also continue to practice counting to 100 and more 100 fun on the 100th day of school. (More info to follow)

Reading/Phonics: Our new story is called: “Farfallina and Marcel” and the skill we will be focusing on is: plot.  We are also working on Ff in the beginning of words and end of words. We will be working on using verbs in future and present tense.  We also will be working on captions.  Our amazing words for this story are: goose, caterpillar, reflection, gosling, butterfly, cocoon. This is a fiction story about how friendships change and the metamorphosis of animals.

Science/Centers: We have been working on how to sort objects, describing them by color, using your 5 senses, materials objects are made of, size, weight, and shape of objects.  We have been sorting blocks in Math and have been using shapes in Math as well.  We also have been using comparing and contrasting in Reading.  All of these are concepts are being tied together in Science.

Getrude Hawk Fundraising went home from PTO.

Great Job on the Dinsoaur Reports!!  We were so impressed with the quality of the reports and presentations.  Way to go!!

The weekly Reading Fluency will now only be on the weekly Reading assessments.  We will still send home sheets to practice reading, but will only be assessed on one paper instead of two.  Any questions, please let us know. Important Dates:

December 22/23 2014 and January 5-9 2015


*First and foremost, Mrs. Borden and Mrs. Jones would like to extend warm holiday wishes to you and your families.  We are most thankful for the first half of the year being so successful because your children are such hard workers and also your family support.  We are excited for the continued progress in the New Year!

*Winter break begins with an early dismissal on December 23 at 1pm and school resumes on January 5, 2015.

*We will begin with new chapters/topics in Reading and Math on January 5.  Introduction newsletters will be sent that day as well.  Homework will resume that week as well.

*It will be Day 4 when we return, please wear sneakers for gym class.

*AR book logs for December are due January 5 when we get back to school.

*Have a most relaxing and well deserved break with your family and we will see you in 2015!*
