week of February 25


Mrs. Borden and Mrs. Jones’ Nifty Newsletter (week of February 25)

In Phonics, our new letter is Jj like in Jar and Jones.  We have been working very hard on beginning sounds and ending sounds of words as well.  Please continue to practice sight words and read your readers.

In Math, we will be working with nickels and counting by 5’s.  We will also be reviewing AB, AABB, and ABC patterns.  We will talk about hot, cold, and various temperatures as well.  We have been working very hard on writing our numbers 0-20.

Our new Reading story is “Abuela”.  It is about an adventure in a city as well as various forms of transportation.  This is our last story in the unit on adventures.  A new unit starts the following week.

Please wear warm coats, hats, and gloves.  We are trying very hard to get outside for recess if at all possible.

On Friday, March 1st, it will be Read Across America Day to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday.  We will have students from Bloomsburg University come in to do a book and reading activity with our class.  We will also have lots and lots of reading fun with our selection of Dr. Seuss books and activities.  Here is a list of things our class has going on this week:

Monday: The Cat in the Hat, The Cat in the Hat Comes Back (rhyming families, patterns, making characters)

Tuesday: The Butter Battle Book, Oobleck (graphing and supporting your opinion, making Oobleck and comparing solids and liquids)

Wednesday: Wacky Wednesday (identify realism vs. fantasy, counting objects, matching illustrations to a story)

Thursday: Horton Hears a Who, Horton Hatches an Egg (5 senses, making predictions, problem solving)

Friday:  The Sneetches (anti-bullying and acceptance of others, support your opinions)

Week of February 18

This week in Phonics we will be learning the consonant letter Vv as in vest and violin. Continue to practice the complete list of sight words that were sent home.

 In Reading we will begin an informational text titled If You Could Go to Antarctica. We will practice the comprehension skill classify and categorize.

In Math we will be working with identifying a cylinder and ordering objects by height & paying for items to 25 cents and 50 cents using nickels. We will also work with ABC patterns.


February is Dental Health Month! We are discussing how to brush properly and to how to take care of our teeth.

week of February 11


Mrs. Borden and Mrs. Jones’ Nifty Newsletter (week of Feb. 11)

This week’s letter is Dd like in Dog.  We will do lots of practice discriminating between Bb and Dd.  Please continue to review sight words daily and reading as much as possible!

In Math, we will continue reviewing AB, AABB, ABAB, and ABC patterns with movement, objects, shapes, and colors.  We will also be working with nickels with identifying them, counting them, and buying objects with them.  Please continue counting to 100 by ones, tens, and fives.

Our new Reading story is Goldilocks and the Three Bears.  Though it is a familiar story, we will be exploring character, setting, problem and solution with the story.  We will also be listening to other takes on the same story.

Please continue to send coats, hats, gloves, scarves, and dress warmly because we do try to get outside as much as possible.

We are also trying to write stories on the backs of our papers as much as possible.  We try to work on two finger spacing, capital letters at the beginning, and punctuation at the end.  Also, we are trying hard to vary our topics that we are writing about as well as elaborating on our story.

Tuesday is Day 4 and is Gym day.  Please wear sneakers.

Wednesday, February 13 will be the Jump Rope for Heart Day.  It is a no day in the rotation schedule.  Please wear Gym clothes that day so that your child will be comfortable to cooperate.

Thursday, February 14 will be the Valentine Party.  Please have one Valentine for every child in the classroom.  If you need another copy of the class list please let us know.

There will be no school for students on Friday, February 15 and Monday, February 18.  School resumes on Tuesday, February 19.

Mrs. Borden & Mrs. Jones Nifty Newsletter (Week of February 4th)

In Phonics we will finish up our work with the vowel Ee, and will also be learning about the consonant l Yy and its sound as in yarn.  Please continue practicing writing and identifying all the letters we have learned so far and sight words.

Our new Reading story will be “One Little Mouse!” by Dori Chaconas.  It will be a rhyming/concept story and we will review the comprehension skill, sequence.  Look for the new Family Times newsletter in your child’s folder.

In Math we will be copying line segments, shapes, and designs on a Geoboard, ordering objects by length and measuring length using nonstandard units, making an ABC pattern using pattern blocks, and acting out some stories using teddy bear counters.

Students had a great time celebrating the 100th day of Kindergarten! Ask your child about all the fun things we did with the number 100!

Saturday, Feb. 2nd is Groundhog’s Day.  Check to see if Phil sees his shadow and whether or not there will be 6 more weeks of winter or an early spring! We did activities and read many books and about Groundhog’s Day this week.

Scholastic book orders for the month of February are due on Monday, February 4th.

Upcoming Events

On Thursday, February 14th we will be having our Valentine’s party from 2:00-3:00.  Valentines will be shared at the party, so have them to school before then! A list was sent home earlier in the week.

Students will participate in “Jump Rope for Hearts” on Wednesday, February 13th. This will NOT count as a day in our specials rotation.

February 11th-14th is Anti Bullying week. Students are encouraged to participate in the following theme days:

Feb. 11th, Monday: Don’t Knock it, Sock it!—wear crazy socks

Feb. 12th, Tuesday: Hats off for no bullying—wear crazy hats or crazy hair

Feb. 13th, Wednesday: Show that you’re a Spartan –-wear NSE shirts

Feb. 14th, Thursday: Show your heart-- wear Red
