week of March 2, 2015

This week in class: 

Math:  We will be finishing up: Topic 8, Understanding Subtraction.  We have been doing a lot of acting out the taking away stories and comparing groups of more or less.  We do review addition and will be reviewing addition and subtraction for the rest of the year.  Please continue to count to 100 by 1s, 5s, 10s, and review shapes and more and less.

Reading/Phonics:  Our new story is called: “My Lucky Day” and the skill we will be focusing on is: cause and effect.  We are also working on Ll in the beginning of words. We will be talking about adventures.  The amazing words are: piglet, filthy, fox, cook, lucky, scrubber.  We will also review: verbs.   We are continuing this story for another week because we did a lot of Reading activities for Dr. Seuss this past week.

Science:  We learned all about gasses this week.  We also talked about how blimps now use helium instead of hydrogen.  We have been working on the different states of water (solid, liquid, gas) and real life examples of them.

Please see red paper about dress code information.  Please also make sure that your child has a spare set of dress code clothes in their cubby in case they need it.

On March 21, the Easter Bunny will be visiting the Frackville Boyer’s Food Markets.  The Easter Bunny will be visiting from 11-2 and they will have healthy snacks, a fun craft, and the class will be completing a poster in class that will be on display.

If anyone is willing to donate a box of tissues for the class, it would be much appreciated.  We are on our last box!

March 2-6 is Newspaper in Education Week. The information was sent home yesterday in a packet.

March calendars have been sent home.

*March 2, AR book logs due back.  The students have been picking their own and will sometimes pick the same one.  If there is book at home that would be preferred, please feel free to log that one instead.

This week in class: 

Math:  We have started: Topic 8, Understanding Subtraction.  We will talk about: stories about separating, stories about take away, stories about comparing, using the minus sign, finding the difference, subtraction sentences, and using objects.  We will continue to review: numbers, counting, patterns, time, money, and other math concepts daily.

Reading/Phonics:  Our new story is called: “My Lucky Day” and the skill we will be focusing on is: cause and effect.  We are also working on Ll in the beginning of words. Science:  Next week we will be talking about what objects keep their shape and what objects can change their shape. We will also be exploring liquids and how they can change.  Our Weekly Reader will be dental health.

This week in class: 

Math:  We will finally be able to start Topic 8, Understanding Subtraction.  We will talk about: stories about separating, stories about take away, stories about comparing, using the minus sign, finding the difference, subtraction sentences, and using objects.  We will continue to review: numbers, counting, patterns, time, money, and other math concepts daily.

Reading/Phonics:  Our new story is called: “Rooster’s Off To See The World” and the skill we will be focusing on is: sequence.  We are also working on Hh in the beginning of words. We will be working on giving directions and naming parts.  

Science:  Next week we will be talking about what objects keep their shape and what objects can change their shape. We will also be exploring liquids and how they can change.  Our Weekly Reader will be about animals in the winter.  We have also talked about Valentine’s Day, Presidents’ Day, and Groundhog’s Day. February is a busy month and we will still be covering Dental Health and Dr. Seuss Day.

week of Feb. 9, 2015

This week in class: (We will be continuing the lessons from the previous week)

Math:  Our topic is still: Topic 7, Addition.  We will have: stories about joining, joining groups, using the plus sign, find sums, and making addition sentences.  We hope to finish the chapter next week in order to take our assessment.  In Math Meeting, we have been counting by ones, fives, tens, tens, and been counting from one number to another (like starting at 65 and counting to 83).

Reading/Phonics:  Our new story is called: “The Lion and the Mouse” and the skill we will be focusing on is: main idea.  We are also working on Oo in the beginning of words and middle of words. We will be working on listening to: poems and sentences.   Our amazing words for this story are: jungle, nibbling, trembling, beast, snarled, entangled.

Science:  We started: Chapter 7, Matter and Mixtures.  We will: identify and measure solid objects, observe how liquids take the shape of their containers, tell that gases fill their containers, tell how water changes by freezing/melting/boiling, and tell what is in some mixtures.

Thank you to those who participated in Jeans For A Cause Day and sent in their dollar.

The 100th Day celebration was a great success!  We counted to 100, counted 100 objects, did fun things with 100, shared our 100 collection, dressed up and did some writings.
