Week of April 30, 2018

***In Math, we will move on to Topic 12, Measurement.  Our topic essential questions is: “How can objects be compared by length, height, capacity, and weight?” Our new Math words are: longer (than), shorter (than), as tall as, taller (than), lighter (than).  Please continue to review: counting to 100 (by ones and tens), identifying numbers, writing numbers 0-20, more/less and greater/fewer, and next number in a series.

***In Reading, our new story is Building With Dad and it is an informational fiction story.  Our amazing words are: groundbreaking, trenches, foundation, welding, waterproof, gleaming. Our essential question is “How is a school built?”.  We will also talk about comparing and contrasting and pronouns I and me.  Please continue to review: letter names, letter sounds, all the sounds you hear in a word, blending sounds together to make a word, reading nightly and practicing all sight words.

***Science and Social Studies-  We were able to discuss maps and map features between our past two reading stories, “On The Move” and “This is the Way we go to School” and we also looked at what a globe looks like through our Earth Day activities.  We cannot wait to explore more living things and life cycles as the weather continues to warm up and things begin to bloom!

***Handwriting/Writing-  We will be working on forming thoughts and sentences.  We will also check to make sure that the illustration matches the sentence so that we are staying on topic.

Week of April 23, 2018

***In Math, we will move on to Topic 11, Decomposing Numbers 11-19.  We will learn to break the numbers 11-19 into parts made up of ten ones and some further ones.  We will also write number sentences to show how we broke the numbers into parts.  Our new Math words are: double ten frame, set.

***In Reading, our new story is This is the Way we go to School and it is an informational fiction story.  Our amazing words are: cable car, trolley, horse and buggy, skis, Metro line, vaporetto . Our essential question is “How do children around the world go to school?”.  We will also talk about drawing conclusions and plot. 

***Science and Social Studies-  We were able to discuss things that would help the Earth for Earth Day.  We also have been identifying plants and animals that live on land and plants and animals that live in water.

***Handwriting/Writing-  We will continue to review capital letter formations each day, one letter review at a time.  After that, we will review lower case letter formations one letter review at a time.  We will also continue responding to prompts while trying to stay in the lines with our lowercase letters and use our 2-finger spacing in between words.

***Important Reminders-  For Kindergarten Graduation Pictures, please wear a white collared shirt.  Girls should not wear their hair up high since they will be wearing caps.  If you are purchasing a package, please return your child’s order form and payment by Wednesday, April 25.

Week of April 16, 2018

***In Math, we will move on to Topic 10, Composing Numbers 11-19.  We will make 11-19 and problem solve by looking for a pattern.  Our essential question is “How can numbers 11-19 be represented as the sum of 10 and some more?”  Please review: counting to 100, number writing to 20, shapes, and positional words.

  ***In Reading, our new story is On the Move and it is a nonfiction story.  Our amazing words are: travel, kayak, llama, dogsled, submarine, double-decker bus.  Our essential question is “How do people in different parts of the world travel?”.  We will also talk about the main idea of the story.  Please review: letter identification, blending words, sounds in words, and answering questions about a story.

   ***Science and Social Studies-  We have just started looking at living things.  We are comparing plants and animals and we will read a few books about the plant life cycle.  We will also read and learn about Earth Day and brainstorm ideas on how to: reduce, reuse, recycle.

***Handwriting/Writing-  We dove into completing a prompt about feelings (happy and sad) and drew a picture to make it match what we wrote about.  We will continue to encourage using our best lowercase letters and two finger spaces while writing.  We only use a capital letter to start a sentence or important word and always end with punctuation.

***Important Reminders-  Please don’t forget to either send the money for the pictures or send the pictures back to school if you do not want to purchase them.  Please also continue to check folders each day for important papers and reminders of upcoming events and to clean out the daily work.

Week of April 9, 2018

***In Math, we will finally finish Topic 9, Composing and Decomposing Numbers to 10.  We will learn different ways to make 4-10.  We will learn to write number sentences to show these different ways.  Our new math words include: whole, part, graph.  We will continue to review: counting to 100 (by ones and tens), writing numbers to 20, 10 frames, next number, number identification, and addition and subtraction stories, as well as more and fewer.

  ***In Reading, our new story is The Little Engine That Could and it is a classic fantasy story.  Our amazing words are: engine, tracks, passenger, roundhouse, mountain, valley.  Our essential question is “What kind of work do trains do?”.  We will also review characters in the story.  Things to review include: all letters and their sounds, making all the sounds in a word, blending sounds together to read a word, and all sight words.

   ***Science and Social Studies-  We have just started looking at living things and we will sequence a life cycle of a chicken.  We also will be looking at plants vs. animals and categorizing both.  We will discuss what living things need to stay alive and to grow.     

***Handwriting/Writing-  We continue to sequence a story in three steps and are working on copying from another source.  We will review to write in all lowercase letters and work on spacing in between words.  We are also trying to go back and review the formations of the capital and lowercase letters before the school year is over.

***Important Reminders-  Please don’t forget to read nightly and fill out the AR log because you will be getting a new one for April.  Also, please continue to practice sight words to increase reading fluency.  If you need any more information about anything else, please feel free to contact us by note, email, or phone call.
