week of February 1, 2016

Week of February 1, 2016

*Due to the snow days, we will be continuing our topics will be continued into the next week.*

Math- Our new topic is Topic 7, and it is covering the basic concepts of addition.  So far, we have introduced using the number sentence and joining two groups of numbers to get the answer.  We will be acting out story problems and adding items together to get an answer.  This topic is off to a great start and everyone is so excited to be able to finally add!  Please continue to practice numbers to 20 and counting to 100.  We have just introduced counting by 5’s so that we can tell time on a clock to the 5 minute mark.  We have previously just been using the hour and the half hour.  Good job to the class!

Science- We will be started our next chapter of: Matter and Mixtures.  Our vocabulary for this chapter includes: matter, solid, liquid, gas, mixture.  We took some time to complete our experiment of trying to change two pieces of matter (clay/paper) by cutting, crumbling, tearing, twisting, and seeing the end result and comparing it to the original materials to see if the matter changed in any way.

Reading- We will continue: The Lion and The Mouse.  We will be discussing changing the way we feel and main idea in the story.  Our amazing words are: jungle, beast, nibbling, snarled, trembling, entangled.  We will also be talking about and listening to other fables as well.  We even started an illustration for our own individual fables and writing the lesson for the fable.

Phonics/Grammar- We review our letters and sounds daily.  Another way to practice is to give a word and have your child give just the first sound (fish…/f/).  You can also give your child a word and have them name all of the sounds in the word (sun… /s/ /u/ /n/).  We have been working together and spelling CVC words like cat, top, mat, etc.  We have also been listing rhyming families (cat, hat, mat, sat, flat, rat).

Writing- Our lowercase letters have been going pretty well.  Lots of us are using them so much more often when writing words and just capitalizing the beginning of names and beginning of sentences.  We are so proud of your hard work!  Continue to start your letters and numbers at the top and keep it on the line.

week of January 18, 2016

Week of January 18, 2015

Math- We will be spending some more time on the topic of: numbers to 100.  We do count to 100 by 10’s and 1’s daily and we will be practicing counting by 2’s.  We use our 100 chart for support when counting, and have been working on writing numbers.  For example, 84 would be written with an 8 and a 4.  Another vocabulary word we use is number line and that helps put numbers in the correct order.  We estimated a group of objects to see if it was closer to a set of 5, 10, or 20 objects.

Science- We will be starting our next chapter of: Matter and Mixtures.  Our vocabulary for this chapter includes: matter, solid, liquid, gas, mixture.  We also completed a celery/colored water experiment last week.  We observed what happened when we cut a piece of celery and put it in colored water overnight.  We listed the steps of the experiment and observed the outcome.

Reading- Our new story is The Lion and The Mouse.  We will be discussing changing the way we feel and main idea in the story.  Our amazing words are: jungle, beast, nibbling, snarled, trembling, entangled.  We review the parts of the book (front cover, back cover, spine, title page) and the job of the author (writes the words) and illustrator (draws the pictures) before we read.  We also discuss if the story could really happen or not (nonfiction vs. fiction).

Writing- Tips for handwriting include: practicing imitation when writing words and have a sample to copy from when writing, pick up your pencil and check your grip before writing, use your helper hand to hold the paper, use a 2 finger space between words, and make sure you are moving from left to right.

Week of January 11, 2015

Math- Our new topic is Topic 6, “What numbers to 100 be counted using a chart” and we will be working on: counting 30 objects, counting groups of 10 and writing how many, solving problems by looking for a pattern on a hundreds chart, counting and writing numbers on the hundreds chart, and recognizing patterns on the 100 chart when counting by 10s and 2s.  We will be gearing up for our 100th day of school celebration that is right around the corner!

Science- We will be finishing our Objects Chapter and be taking the assessment next week.  We will be moving on to the next chapter, Matter and Mixtures.  We will be working on: knowing that solids, liquids, and gasses are different forms of matter.  We will also be looking at water as a solid, a liquid, and/or gas.  Finally, we will learn that people can put things together to make a mixture.

Reading- Our new story is Farfallina and Marcel.  We will be discussing plot in the story.  Our amazing words are: goose, caterpillar, reflection, gosling, butterfly, cocoon.  We will be looking for captions in stories.

Phonics/Grammar- We have started our consonant Ff  like in Fish and will be identifying it in the beginning of words.  We will be reviewing verbs for now and in the future.  We have been busy acting out different verbs in the classroom.

Writing- Our lowercase letters for next week will include: w, t, o, and a review of c, o, s, and v. We also have been reviewing the importance of a capital letter at the beginning of the sentence and for important names, but lowercase letters otherwise.  We have also been talking about ending a sentence with a period, exclamation point, or a question mark if it is a question.
