week of May 1, 2017

Mrs. Borden and Mrs. Jones’ Newsletter (Week of May 1, 2017)

Math: Our new topic is, Topic 13.  Our topic essential question is: What are different ways objects can be grouped?  We will identify same and different by the attributes of color, size, and shape.  We will sort the same set in different ways.  We will solve problems by thinking logically and make and read a real picture graph.

Reading: Our new story is Building With Dad and it is a book that we will use to focus on comparing and contrasting.  We will be looking at how a school is built and revisit the important story elements of: character, setting, cause/effect, sequencing, and main idea.

Handwriting/Writing:  We will work on writing words that we can spell.  We will practice sight words, CVC words, and words we use a lot.  We will also be working on missing letters in the alphabet and all the sounds the letters make.  We will continue our sentence dictation and staying on topic while writing.

***Please continue to review all letters, sounds, numbers, counting patterns, as well as sight words.  Also, please continue to read each night and complete the AR book log as the goal is at least 15 books a month.

***Please also remember to pack a snack each day for your child.  If they would like a drink, please pack that as well.  Thank you!

week of April 24, 2017

Mrs. Borden and Mrs. Jones’ Newsletter (Week of April 24, 2017)

Math: Our new topic is, Topic 12, Measurement. Our math words to use are: longer than, shorter than, as tall as, taller than, lighter than.  Our Topic Essential Question is: How can objects be compared by length, height, capacity, and weight?  We will continue this topic until the end of the week.

 Reading: Our new story is This Is The Way We Go To School and it is a book that we will use to focus on the plot of the story.  We will discuss how children in different parts of the world get to school.  Our amazing words include: cable car, trolley, horse and buggy, skis, Metro line, vaporetto.

Handwriting/Writing:  We will continue to work on our Daily Fix Its (where the sentences are lacking some of the writing rules) and the class has to fix the problems.  We will look at using capital letters at the beginning and lowercase everywhere else, two finger spacing, and correct punctuation at the end.  We will also review all capital letters and putting them in alphabetical order.  We are working hard on writing words that we know how to spell in our best handwriting.

Mrs. Borden and Mrs. Jones’ Newsletter (Week of April 17, 2017)

Math: Our new topic is, Topic 12, Measurement. Our math words to use are: longer than, shorter than, as tall as, taller than, lighter than.  Our Topic Essential Question is: How can objects be compared by length, height, capacity, and weight?

 Reading: Our new story is On the Move and it is a book that we will use to focus on the main idea of the story.  We will discuss how people in different parts of the world travel.  Our amazing words include: travel, kayak, llama, dogsled, double decker bus, submarine.

Handwriting/Writing:  Our sentence dictation is going nicely!   We write using CVC words, sight words, and other common words.  We stay on topic and our illustration matches our writing!  We will be reviewing our numbers 0-10 and working on writing words and sentences with our lowercase letters.

***Please continue to review all letters, sounds, numbers, counting patterns, as well as sight words.  Also, please continue to read each night and complete the AR book log as the goal is at least 15 books a month.

week of April 10, 2017

Mrs. Borden and Mrs. Jones’ Newsletter (Week of April 10, 2017)

Math: Our new topic is, Topic 11, Decomposing Numbers 11-19. We will learn to break the numbers 11 to 19 into parts made up of ten ones and some further ones.  We will write number sentences to show how we broke the numbers into parts.  Our math words to use are: double ten frame, set.

 Reading: Our new story is The Little Engine that Could and it is a book that we will use to focus on the plot of the story.  Our amazing words include: engine, tracks, passenger, roundhouse, mountain, valley. 

Handwriting/Writing: We have been working on our lowercase letters and writing our number correctly very hard!  We also have been working hard on applying the rules of: 2 finger spaces between words, capitalize only the first letter of the sentence/names/I, punctuation at the end of the sentence, staying on topic, and using our best writing and spelling.

week of April 4, 2017

Mrs. Borden and Mrs. Jones’ Newsletter (Week of April 4, 2017)

Math: Our new topic is, Topic 10, and our essential question is “How can you add 1 ten and some ones to make the numbers 11-19?”  We will be representing numbers 11-19 with a composition of 10 plus 1, 10 plus 2, etc.  We will also be using drawings and number sentences to identify patterns on the first two rows of the hundreds chart.

Reading: Our new story is Trucks Roll! and it is a big book that we will use to focus on comparing and contrasting.  Our amazing words include: trailers, haul, truckers, cabs, steering wheel, headlight.  We will be reviewing vowel sounds in words and discussing our response to questions from our story.

Handwriting/Writing: We have been working on writing our first and last names without random capitals in the middle.  We discussed using initials as well.  We will continue to dictate short sentences with CVC words for practice.  They are often on the back of our handwriting if you would like to review them.
