week of September 29, 2014


This week in class:
 
Math:  We will be working on Topic 1, Numbers 1-5.  We will be writing these numbers, counting objects, and working on one-to-one correspondence.  We will also continue to review shapes (2D) and colors with some of our independent work.
 
Reading: Our new story is called: “Smash! Crash!” and the skill we will be focusing on is character.  We are also working on consonant Mm.  We will be working on initial and final Mm in words.  In small groups, we are working on letter identification and sight words and reading sentences.  We also will introduce nouns for people and animals. 
 
Science: We will be starting living/nonliving things.  We spent last week working Johnny Appleseed and apples/fall.  We will be adding pumpkins to our science center to make observations about and discuss.

Homecoming Week is this week.  Please see the pink sheet in your child’s folder for a list of activities for NSE.
 
 Kindergarten may only shop at the school store on Mondays.  Please make your child aware that the store is only open until the bell for homeroom.
 
Our Hearing Screenings will be on Tuesday, September 30.
 
Wednesday is Day 1, Art.  Please send an old shirt that your child can keep in their cubby for their Art Shirt.  They will be painting that day, but it is helpful to keep in the cubby for the year.
 
 
 
 
Reminders:
 
We need volunteers for the Fall Festival.  You only need clearances to do so and this is not a PTO event.
 
Please keep the sight word envelope in the folder.  We will fill the envelope with the flash cards as we introduce them in school.
 
Thanks for all of your cooperation with sending things back to school, labeling them, labeling envelopes that contain money.  It is really helping the year run smoothly!
 
New calendars and menus and newsletters will be coming home for October. They contain lots of good information.

week of September 22, 2014


This week in class:
 
Math:  We started Topic 16 and we will be analyzing, comparing, and composing shapes.  We also have been writing numbers 0-10 and counting on our calendar and days of school as well.
 
Reading: Our new story is called: “Miss Bindergarten Takes a Field Trip” and the skill we will be focusing on is classifying and categorizing.  We will identify jobs within a community. We are also working on syllables, rhymes, and rhythm daily.  In small groups, we are working on letter identification and sight words and reading sentences.  We also have started writing topics and have worked on: invitations, describing words, labels, and have gone over a period, exclamation mark, and quotation marks.
 
Science: We just wrapped up making observations and safety  and will be starting living/nonliving things.  We also started learning centers with independent work in small groups and everyone did a FANTASTIC JOB!
 
 
Reminders:
 
Please sign and return all stamped tests and papers as soon as possible.  We use them to track progress on Common Core Standards and appreciate your cooperation.
 
The $4.00 for Fall Festival is due as soon as possible.
 
There is no meeting for the Fall Festival this week, however, we need volunteers.  You only need clearances to do so and this is not a PTO event.

On Monday, September 22, we will be practicing an intruder drill.  An Alert Now message previously went out about this and we practiced it first.
 
All next week, we will be working on an Apple Unit for Johnny Appleseed’s birthday.  Please send in 1 apple by Wednesday with your child so that we can graph, count, compare/contrast, and make applesauce.

week of September 15, 2014

This week in class:

Math:  We will be finishing positional words such as: in/out, in front of/behind, top/bottom, left/right and demonstrating their meanings.  Thanks for signing and returning the test on shapes so very quickly.  Our next chapter will be analyzing, comparing, and composing shapes.

Reading: Our new story is called: “Plaidypus Lost” and the skill will be focusing on sequencing.  We will identify how many syllables are in words as well as introduce letters: O,P,Q,R,S.  We are also working on syllables, rhymes, and rhythm daily.
 
Science: We complete a weather log daily when we complete the calendar for each day.  We will also be working on making observations and science safety.  Great job on identifying the pattern in our daily calendar!


Reminders:

Please practice the enclosed sight words found in the envelope in the folder.  You may work ahead with your child with the list also located in the sleeve of the folder.  We will be adding 2 new sight words to the envelope.

If an order form comes home and you are interested in ordering from it (for example, a T-shirt) please send the money with the order form in an envelope.

Anyone who has not sent back the PTO Field Trip T-shirt form, please do so right away.  This is a free shirt that is provided by PTO to wear on the Field Trip and they do need the size for your child.

week of September 8, 2014


This week in class:
 
Math:  We will be reviewing all shapes and their identifying features and will be taking an assessment on them this week.  We will then be moving into positional words such as: in/out, in front of/behind, top/bottom and demonstrating their meanings.
 
Reading: Our new story is called: “We Are So Proud” and the skill will be focusing on setting and reviewing character.  We will also be starting to identify how many syllables are in words as well as introduce letters: F,G,H,I,J,K,L,M,N.  The assessment from the last story was sent home in the folder to be signed and returned.
 
Science: We complete a weather log daily when we complete the calendar for each day.  We will also be working on making observations and introducing science as a topic in general.
 


Reminders:

 

Please send a snack with your child daily.  It should be something small and could include a drink.  We eat before 11:00 recess daily.

 

Please label all of your child’s items that may include: coats, book bags, lunch cans, extra clothes, or supplies.  It will make things so much easier in the event that it gets misplaced.
