Week of April 20th

Date: week of April 19th, 2015


This week in class:

Math:  We are beginning Topic 12 Measurement. Students have a lot of fun with this hands-   on topic! We will compare length, height, capacity and weight. We will continue to: count to 100, add and subtract, sort objects, and identify and describe shapes throughout the week.

Reading/Phonics:  Our new story is called: “Trucks Roll” and the skill we will be comparing and contrasting. We will discuss different types of transportation that help people do their jobs. In Phonics we will work with the letter u in the initial and medial position.

Writing: We will learn about poems and write our own.

Science:   Our chapter, Living and Nonliving Things will continue this week. We will discuss the needs of living things and learn about ways animals are alike and different and how plants are alike and different.



Reminders:

-When practicing the sight words, please make sure to use the sight word cards and mix them up to ensure they are not memorizing the list!

-Please continue to review all of the DIBELS skills of: letter naming, first sounds, segmenting, and nonsense words.  The last test is at the end of April.

No written  homework this week! Practice DIBELS skills and work on United States reports (Coming home, Tuesday, April 21st)



Important Dates:
  
*PSSA testing will continue next week and finish on April 23rd.
*Please refer to the special rotation schedule that was sent home last week. Due to PSSA testing we will not have specials on testing days.

  
Physicals will be held April 23. They will begin at 9:00. Children who have parents present will be examined first.

Week of April 13th

Date: week of April 13, 2015


This week in class:

Math:  We are decomposing numbers 11-19.  We will learn to break the numbers 11-19 into parts made of ten and some further ones.  We will continue to: count to 100, add and subtract, sort objects, and identify and describe shapes throughout the week.

Reading/Phonics:  Our new story is called: “Max Takes the Train” and the skill we will be differentiating Fiction and Nonfiction.
Writing: We will learn what captions are and how to use them to describe their picture.
Science:  We will begin our next chapter, Living and Nonliving Things. We will discuss the needs of living things and learn about ways animals are alike and different and how plants are alike and different.



Reminders:

Next week we will focus on letters Jj, Ww and Xx.  As culminating activities, we will share jokes, experiment with water on “Watery Wednesday”, and end the week with a treasure hunt with X marking the spot! Please practice a joke with your child. They can share their joke any day next week.

-Please contine to review all of the Dibels skills of: letter naming, first sounds, segmenting, and nonsense words.  The last test is at the end of April.

This week in class:

Math:  We are starting topic 11, decomposing numbers 11-19.  We will learn to break the numbers 11-19 into parts made of ten and some further ones.  We will continue to: count to 100, add and subtract, sort objects, and identify and describe shapes throughout the week.

Reading/Phonics:  Our new story is called: “Abuela” and the skill we will be focusing on is: setting and listening for poems.  We are also working on Ee in the beginning of words and in the middle of words. We will be talking about making a list, and pronouns of  I and me.  The amazing words are: abuela, flock, airport, adventure, city, harbor.

Science:  We will be finishing up Chapter 8 and reviewing the concepts of: above, pulled, pushed, fastest, slowest, and magnet attraction.  We will be taking the assessment after the review and starting another chapter the following week.


Reminders:

-Graduation Pictures will be Wednesday, April 8.  Please have your child wear a white collared shirt that day.  Girls, please no hair bows because the children will be wearing caps with the gowns.  There is no make-up picture day, and everyone will be photographed for the class composite.  Please fill out and return the envelope as soon as possible.

-If you received a purple Kindergarten physical form, please sign and return as soon as possible!

-When report cards are sent home, please sign and return the envelope and rubrics as soon as possible.  We thank you for your cooperation.
