week of March 30, 2015

This week in class:

Math:  We are starting topic 10, composing numbers 11-19.  We will be making 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, and 19 and looking for a pattern.  We will be working with numbers 11-19 to gain the foundations for place value.  We will continue to: count to 100, add and subtract, sort objects, and identify and describe shapes throughout the week.

Reading/Phonics:  Our new story is called: “If You Could Go To Antarctica” and the skill we will be focusing on is: classifying and categorizing and listening for character.  We are also working on Ee in the beginning of words and in the middle of words. We will be talking about capital letters, periods, and writing a letter.  The amazing words are: Antarctica, icebergs, seals, continent, penguins, whales.

Science:  We have covered position of objects as well as push/pull and the force that makes objects move.  We will also be using magnets.  We have talked about Spring in our Weekly Reader.


Reminders:

-Graduation Pictures will be Wednesday, April 8.  Please have your child wear a white collared shirt that day.  Girls, please no hair bows because the children will be wearing caps with the gowns.  There is no make-up picture day, and everyone will be photographed for the class composite.  Please fill out and return the envelope as soon as possible.

-April calendars and menus will be sent home.  Please refer to them for further information.

-When report cards are sent home, please sign and return the envelope and rubrics as soon as possible.  We thank you for your cooperation.

-When practicing the sight words, please make sure to use the sight word cards and mix them up to ensure they are not memorizing the list!

*In April, the PTO will be holding a Basket Auction for a fundraiser.  We appreciate all of the donations.  Please look for our basket named “Car Care”.

*The marking period ends at the end of March and we will be starting our fourth and final marking period of the year in April.  Keep up the good work!

*No School on Friday, April 3, but we do have school Monday, April 6.

Date: week of March 23, 2015

This week in class: 

Math:  We will continue Topic 9, composing and decomposing numbers to 10.  We will be making these numbers in different ways along with making the number sentences for this week.  We will continue to review sorting, shapes, more/less, greater/fewer, counting by 1’s/10’s to 100, adding and subtracting.

Reading/Phonics:  Our new story is called: “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” and the skill we will be focusing on is: character.  We are also working on Gg in the beginning of words and at the end of words. We will be talking about telling sentences and making a list.  The amazing words are: bears, cottage, middle-sized, porridge, big, small.

Science:  We just started Chapter 8, Motion.  We will be describing an object’s position.  We will also be learning about what makes objects move and how they move.  We will also be using magnets.  Our vocabulary words are: position, above, below, push, pull, fast, slow, magnet, attract.


Reminders:

Sight Words: The sight word envelopes can stay at home so they don’t get lost in the shuffle.  We have given out all of the sight words cards from the Kindergarten list.

week of March 16, 2015

This week in class: 

Math:    We have started Topic 9, composing and decomposing numbers to 10.  We will be making 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.  We will write number sentences for all of these as well. We do review addition and will be reviewing addition and subtraction for the rest of the year.  Please continue to count to 100 by 1s, 5s, 10s, and review shapes and more and less.

Reading/Phonics:  Our new story is called: “One Little Mouse” and the skill we will be focusing on is: sequence.  We are also working on consonant blends in the beginning of words. We will be talking about descriptions of things.  The amazing words are: woodland, vale, comfortable, nest, hollow, shadows .

Science:  We will be finishing up our Matter unit shortly.  We have been talking about the seasons and getting ready for spring.  Daily, we have been talking about months, holidays, weather, time, and money.
Reminders:

Sight Words: The sight word envelopes can stay at home so they don’t get lost in the shuffle.  We have given out all of the sight words cards from the Kindergarten list.

On March 21, the Easter Bunny will be visiting the Frackville Boyer’s Food Markets.  The Easter Bunny will be visiting from 11-2 and they will have healthy snacks, a fun craft, and the class will be completing a poster in class that will be on display.

If anyone is willing to donate a box of tissues for the class, it would be much appreciated.  We are on our last box!  Thanks so much for everyone who has donated already!  We appreciate it!
