week of April 22, 2019

Mrs. Borden and Mrs. Jones’ Newsletter (Week of April 22, 2019)

Writing:  We have been busy writing about many different topics including: our favorite plant, about our caterpillar, the windy weather, and what we did over the weekend.  We are trying to write to incorporate ideas from Reading and Science/Social Studies and Math whenever possible.  We always make sure that we are staying on the topic (and using the prompt) and that our illustration matches the writing.  Keep on writing!

Reading: Our new story is: Building With Dad and it is an informational fiction story. We will be working on comparing/contrasting within the story.  Our amazing words are: groundbreaking, trenches, foundation, welding, waterproof, gleaming.  Our essential question for the story is: How is a school built?  We will continue reading our words/sentences/stories in our small groups and doing lots of word work.  We will continue to chop out words, change sounds in words, make rhyming pairs, and blend sounds together to say/read words.  Keep on practicing those sight words, we are flying through the lists!

Math: Our Unit 8, Coins and Financial Literacy, is off to a great start.  We started with identifying a Penny and the value.  We are also talking about earning, spending, and saving.  Any chance you have to go over coins at home would be great and much appreciated!

Science/Social Studies: We have been talking about different ways to be good to our Earth. We have learned about reduce, reuse, recycle and how we can help out by being responsible citizens.  We had a great Weekly Reader to explain Earth Day to us.

week of April 15, 2019

Mrs. Borden and Mrs. Jones’ Newsletter (week of April 15, 2019)

Writing-We are so excited to be able to start our Building Information Writers next week!  We will be: writing about a true topic, writing facts about the topic, and drawing a picture to match the topic.  We have also been using Writing Journals in the morning right for Morning Work.  We put a sentence starter on the board and they copy it and then finish the thought.  They will also make an illustration to match the story and read it to a buddy.  We are so thrilled with the authors/illustrators they have become!

Reading- We have a new story this week and it is: This Is The Way We Go To School!  It is an informational fiction story.  Our essential question is: How do children around the world get to school?  Our amazing words are: cable car, trolley, horse-and-buggy, skis, Metro line, vaporetto.   We will be drawing conclusions and talking about plot of the story.  We are so impressed with the class chopping out sounds in words, writing words, writing sentences, and reading words and sentences.  Keep up the fabulous work!

Math- We are finishing up: Time, Measurement, and Data.  We will be moving on to: Coins and Financial Literacy next.  We have been working on the names of: penny, nickel, dime, and quarter along with dollar bill throughout the school year.  We also talk about what we use money for along with needs vs. wants.

Science- We had a wonderful lesson on the Butterfly life cycle while exploring living things.  We were able to incorporate “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle while completing an art activity for our bulletin board.  We also talked about the different colors in the rainbow and the plant life cycle with this week’s Weekly Reader.

week of April 8, 2019

Mrs. Borden and Mrs. Jones’ Newsletter (week of April 8, 2019)

Writing- We are starting to write about going different places and what we do there.  For example, we wrote about going camping.  We set up a tent, built a fire, and ate some hot dogs (or marshmallows).  We also wrote about something that we can now do that we could not do before we started Kindergarten.  We had some great responses including: reading, counting to 100, doing Math, and handwriting.  We are so proud of everyone’s progress.

Reading- We have a new story this week and it is: On The Move!  It is an informational fiction story.  Our essential question is: How do people in different parts of the world travel?  Our amazing words are: travel, kayak, llama, dogsled, submarine, double-decker bus.   We will be working on main idea and we will identify nouns in sentences.  Keep on practicing those sight words and reading together each night for your book logs!  We are so proud of the blending and reading that everyone is doing!

Math- We started Measurement and Time.  Our essential question is “How and why do we measure things?”  We have been measuring objects with cubes and comparing their lengths.  We have attached our class graph of progress from the Spring Math Benchmarks.  We are so proud of everyone’s hard work and progress!
