week of January 2, 2013

Mrs. Borden and Mrs. Jones’ Nifty Newsletter (week of January 2, 2013)

In Phonics, our new letter is Bb like in Balloon.  Please review all letters and sounds and continue practicing all of the sight words over the holiday break.

In Math, we will be “counting on” with bears and other manipulatives.  We will also be working with numbers 0-20 with counting, writing and putting the numbers in order.  We will be looking at a set of numbers and determining number position using a number line.

Our new Reading story is “Farfallina and Marcel” and it is about how friendships change.  We will be talking about the plot of the story.  We will also be continuing our verb work and talking about using verbs in past tense.

Because we were celebrating all week, we continued the fun with King Day on Wednesday.  The Kings (boys) wore crowns, got to line up first, got to play a fun Phonics game, and were called King or Your Majesty.  The girls were oh so kind to push in chairs, pass out their papers, and help whenever possible.  The roles will be reversed when it is Queen Day for the letter Qq.  Congratulations to the class for working so nicely together in the Kingdom of Kindergarten!

We will be back in school on Wednesday, January 2, 2013.  It will be day 1B, Art.  Thursday will be Book Exchange, please remember your library books.

On behalf of Mrs. Borden and Mrs. Jones, we wish all the families a very happy holiday season.  We hope that you have a very happy and healthy New Year.  We look forward to the New Year and the continued growth and progress for the remainder of the school year.

week of December 3, 2012

Mrs. Borden and Mrs. Jones’ Nifty Newsletter (week of December 3)

Homework for the week:

Monday:
all Santa letters due back and ½ sheet practice

Tuesday-Thursday:
½ sheet practice and reader practice, please don’t forget to practice sight words in the envelopes as well

Our new letter is Ff like in Fish. We have been working really hard reviewing all sounds and letters daily and our Phonics papers are now including words that have 4 sounds to blend. If your child is having trouble blending the words, there are still many things that you can do with the word lists to practice the words. You can practice identifying all the letters, making their sounds, and model blending the words. Also, using the words in sentences or talking about the words makes your child more familiar with the words. If you need any other suggestions or need more information, please let us know.

Our new reading story is Little Panda. It will be an informational story about a panda born in a zoo. We will compare and contrast baby pandas and mother pandas. We also have been working very hard on our adjectives (describing words) for colors, sizes, and numbers.

In Math, we will be counting pennies and problem solving. We will also be matching numbers to the correct amount of dots. We will continue our work with the geoboards and everyone did such a good job with making plane shapes this past week.

We would like to give a great big thank you to our presenters from the Seatbelt Safety Program as well as a great job to the Kindergarteners. They were a very good audience and were well behaved!

Our mailman friend will coming to visit us on Friday to collect our letters to Santa and will make sure they get to the North Pole. This is a very special time for Kindergarten and we have lots of fun and meaningful activities planned to make the most of the holiday season.

Hello Spartan Family,                     I loved speaking with all of you on the phone! I sent an email with everything we talked about ...
