week of March 16, 2020

Mrs. Borden and Mrs. Jones’ Newsletter (March 16, 2020)
Handwriting/Writing:  We will be writing about travel and visiting different countries and what you can see, eat, and/or do in those countries.  We have been talking about writing with our 5 senses.  We have also reviewed letter formations Aa-Ll.  We have practiced and then wrote our numbers 0-20.
Reading:  We have been reading various stories for St. Patrick’s Day and writing about being lucky or what we would do with a pot of gold.  We practice our letter sounds, manipulating sounds in words, rhyming words, and identifying blends in words each day.  We have been practicing finding our vowel in a CVC word and then blending the word in our head.
Math:  We have been talking about taking apart (subtraction).  We have been telling stories with objects and pictures and identifying how many we have and taking some away and then how many we have left.  We have also been repeating the entire subtraction sentence.  In Spring Math, we have been looking at a number and then determining whether we need to add or subtract dots to make the correct number of dots.
Science/Social Studies:  We learned about metamorphosis and the life cycle of a frog and butterfly.  We worked through our Weekly Reader to learn about the different stages of the frog life cycle and read “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle to learn about the change from caterpillar to butterfly.

week of March 9, 2020

Mrs. Borden and Mrs. Jones’ Newsletter (March 9, 2020)
Handwriting/Writing:  We are continuing to review capital and lowercase letters with H h, I i, and J j.  We stress the importance of starting at the top and staying inside the lines.  We will also be looking forward to writing more about food and drink.
Reading:  We have been working so hard on short vowels in words and long vowel sounds.  We are also blending sounds together in our heads to read a word out loud.  We will continue to name letters quickly, make sounds for letters, and make all the sounds in a given word.  We were so happy to hear one of our favorite stories this week, My Lucky Day and identified the twist at the end of the story!
Math:  We are thrilled to be starting our Subtraction Unit this week.  We have mastered putting together (addition) and did great on our addition assessment so we are very ready to take away.  We will continue our Spring Math topic of counting objects and writing the number 0-20.
Science/Social Studies:  We have been talking about being lucky and what we would do with a pot of gold for St. Patrick’s Day and we also talked about wild weather in our Weekly Reader because we have seen some drastic changes in the weather recently!
