Mrs.
Borden and Mrs. Jones’ Newsletter (week of March 4, 2019)
Writing-
We
did a writing this week using information from our Antarctica story. We had to complete a prompt about what we
would do if we went to Antarctica and complete an illustration to match
it. We saw penguins, swam with whales,
and gave food to the animals there. We
will be completing a prompt from the stories each week in addition to working
on the writing activities in our Building
Writers book. Great story telling
everyone!
Reading- We
have a new story this week and it is: Abuela
and it is a fantasy story. Our
essential question is: What kind of
adventures can you have in a city? Our
amazing words are: abuela, adventure,
flock, city, airport, harbor. We
will be working on the setting of the story and we will be looking at the
features of a city compared to where we live.
Attached is an article on beginning readers. Because we are working so hard on blending
sounds together to read words and reading sentences, here are some tips to help
out at home. These tips can be used even
if you child is past the beginning reader stage but is moving on to more
difficult text and sounding out those words.
Keep reading everyone!
Math- We
are well into Unit 4, Understanding
Addition. We are looking for number
stories everywhere. We are telling addition stories with counters, drawing
them on the dry erase board, writing them on the back of our papers, and acting
them out. We will also continue to work
on counting by 1s and 10s, what number comes next, what number is missing in a
series of 3, more/fewer, and reading a 2 and 3 digit number.
Science/Social
Studies- Well, we had a day for Dr. Seuss’ birthday! It was so much fun! We tried Green Eggs and Ham and talked about
how we should try new things and decided if we liked them or not. We enjoyed our activities with the students
from Bloomsburg University. We read so
many of Dr. Seuss’ classic books and had a few crafts that we worked on to
match some of the characters in the stories like: Thing 1 and Thing 2, Horton,
and Fox in Socks. We also had a chance
to have some guest readers come from the High School at the end of the
day. Big and small, fun was had by all J
