Mrs.
Borden and Mrs. Jones’ Newsletter (week of March 11, 2019)
Writing-
Once
again, the writing for this week’s topic was great! We wrote about an activity that we like to do
with someone special. We had people
going to Hershey, the beach, the zoo, to a relative’s house, and a few other
adventures. We do have to remember to
put a period to end our sentences and use the two-finger spacing between our
words sometimes, but we all stayed on topic and made wonderful illustrations to
match the stories! We will continue to
work in our Building Writers book
several days a week and will be wrapping up the Narrative Writing portion shortly.
Reading- We
will be starting a new unit, Unit 5
and our essential question for the unit is: How
do people and things get from here to there? We have a new story this week
and it is: Max Takes the Train it is
an animal fantasy story. Our essential
question is: What are different ways of
going places? Our amazing words are:
plane, jetway, subway, tunnel, ferryboat,
sidecar. We will be working on
realism versus fantasy and we will be working on asking and answering questions. Keep on practicing those sight words and
reading together each night for your book logs!
Math- We are
starting Unit 5, Understanding
Subtraction. Unit 4 was a success
with addition and we mastered putting
things together, ways to make 5, the vocabulary of sum, plus sign, and equal sign, and counting groups of
objects. We will be introducing the
vocabulary of: difference, minus sign,
and the concept of taking away and what it left. In Spring
Math, we are counting dots (0-20) and writing the correct number as quickly
and accurately as we can.
Science/Social
Studies- We were finally able to have our lesson with the
Bloomsburg University students that was postponed from March 1 due to the
weather. The story that we heard was Dr.
Seuss’ The Lorax and we were thrilled
to be able to complete a fun activity to go along with the classic. We will also be exploring Spring and don’t
forget Daylight Savings time is this weekend!
Our weekly reader explored the different types of weather that come with March.
