week of January 21, 2013

Mrs. Borden and Mrs. Jones’ Nifty Newsletter (week of January 21)

In Phonics, we will be working on the letter Cc like in Cat.  It makes the same sound as Kk and our new phonics rule is: We spell the /k/ sound with the letter K when the sound is followed by the letters e,I, or y.  We spell the /k/ sound with the letter C when the sound is followed by the letters a,o,u or any consonant.  We will also be working on alphabetical order and continue to review beginning sounds and rhyming.

In Math, we will be comparing length and identifying longer and shorter.  We will also be naming shape pieces using three attributes of size, shape, and color.  We will continue to review the numbers 0-20 by counting objects and writing the numbers.  We have been using penny, nickel, and dime daily in our Math Meeting and started talking about cutting objects in half.

Our new unit is “Let’s Explore” and we will be talking about where our adventure will take us.  Bunny Day is our new story and we will be talking about our daily adventures as well as time to the hour.  We will also be talking about the naming parts of our sentences.

The presidential inauguration is Monday, January 21 and so is Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  We have been talking about the importance of this day this past week through Weekly Readers and Brain Pop Jr.

Report cards will be going home on Wednesday, January 23.  Please sign and return them as soon as possible.  Any questions or concerns, please let us know.

Monday is the 92nd day of school and we are now in the 3rd marking period and inching closer to the very special 100th day of school.  More information will follow this very important day in Kindergarten, but we have been preparing by counting to 100 by 1s, 10s, and 5s.

Thursday is Day 2, Library.  Please remember your library book.

Have a super week!
