week of Oct. 1, 2018

Mrs. Borden and Mrs. Jones’ Newsletter (Week of October 1)

Handwriting/Writing:  We will continue to review “Frog Jump Capitals” while we are teaching the remaining capital letters.  We will also continue to work on “Starting Corner Capitals” and numbers to 5.  We are very impressed with how handwriting is improving each and every day.  Things like: staying within the boundaries, making the correct curves and lines to form the letters, and being able to copy the letter formation has been going very well.  Keep up the good work!

Reading: Our new story is: Dig, Dig, Digging and it is a nonfiction story.  Our weekly essential question is: “How do machines help you work? “We will be classifying and categorizing.  Our amazing words are: scooping, swooshing, squelching, gobbling, spinning, rumbling.  We will continue to talk about nouns.  We have been introducing many letters and sounds wherever possible (Morning Meeting, Handwriting, Reading, Small Groups) to get as many of the letters and sounds taught as possible.  We continue to chop sounds in words and clap out the syllables.

In Math, we will be wrapping up our topic on Numbers 0-10.  We will review counting to 10, writing the numbers, identifying the numbers, and counting objects to represent the numbers.  We will continue to count to 100, add numbers on our daily school day count, and talk about calendar and weather.

Science/Social Studies:  This past week, we had an amazing apple unit to celebrate Johnny Appleseed’s birthday and the beginning of Fall.  We made applesauce, made Johnny Appleseed headbands, read several books about apples, graphed our favorite apples after having an apple taste test, labeled parts of an apple, made an apple craft, and so much more!  We thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
