Math:   After we review our past topics and take our Topic 5 assessment, we will be starting a new topic. Our Topic will be: Topic 6, Numbers to 100.  We will learn how to count to 100 and learn about number patterns.  Our math words are: row, column, count by 2s and count by 10s.  We have been doing many of those things to lead up to this topic.  Please continue to practice counting by 1s, 5s, and 10s.  We do use a 100 chart in school to help us practice counting to 100.  We also practice identifying 2 digit numbers, for example: 68 is a 6 and an 8.

Reading:  Our new story is “The Lion and The Mouse” and we will be focusing on main idea.  We will be talking about changing the way we feel.  Our amazing words are: jungle, snarled, beast, trembling, nibbling, entangled.  We will be continuing to explore first sounds of words, segmenting words, letter names, letter sounds, and blending words.  Practicing all letters and sounds is very beneficial as well as taking apart words such as: cat would be /k/ /a/ /t/ and making all of the sounds in the words.

Mrs. Borden and Mrs. Jones’ Newsletter (Week of January 9, 2017)

Welcome back to school for the New Year!  We have been working very hard getting back into the routine and continuing to progress on our skills.  Coming up this week, we are starting new Math and Reading topics.

Math: Our new topic is, Topic 5, Numbers to 20.  We will be counting, reading, and writing numbers 11-20 and will be using logical reasoning to problem solve.  Words to know include ten frame and double ten frame.  Practicing counting, writing, and reading these numbers at home is beneficial to reinforce what we are working on in school.

Reading: Our new story is Farfallina and Marcel and it is a trade book that we will use to focus on plot of the story.  Our amazing words include: goose, caterpillar, reflection, gosling, butterfly, cocoon.  This story ties nicely into Science topics that include: migration and metamorphosis.  We will also be looking at captions in the book and reviewing other text features like bold words and types of punctuation.

Ideas for practice: We review daily: all letters and sounds and words that begin with each letter.  We also work on blending sounds together smoothly when reading.  Please review all sight words and continue with the January AR reading log as the goal is at least 15 books per month.  We have a few students who can orally count to 100 and they are able to have their names on the wall for meeting the goal.

**If you need any more ideas for practice or have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call, send an email, or write a note in the folder.  Thanks for all of your cooperation, we are very proud of the progress made over the past few month and look forward to even more growth the second half of the year!
